Google Photos Trash: Recover without installing anything
If image backup was enabled, this is the fastest way and doesn't require any installation.
Where is the trash can?
The cloud recycle bin stores everything you've deleted in the last 60 days, with the photo intact and in its original resolution.
Open the Photos app, tap Library in the bottom corner of the screen, and then Trash. The list appears organized from most recently deleted to oldest, with the number of days remaining until each file is permanently deleted.
It's worth checking carefully. Many people look quickly, don't find the photo on the first screen and give up, when in fact the file was a few scrolls down.
How to restore step by step
Hold your finger on the first photo until the selection marker appears. Without releasing, drag over the other photos you want to recover, or tap them one by one. With everything selected, tap Restore at the bottom.
The images are returned to their original album with the date they were taken, not today's date. If you were organizing them by folders, they will automatically return to the correct folder.
The trash can in the device's gallery
There's a second type of recycle bin that almost nobody remembers: the manufacturer's. Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, and other brands have their own recycle bin within the gallery app, separate from the cloud, which usually stores files for 30 days.
Open your phone's gallery, look for the three-dot menu, and see if the Trash or Recently Deleted. It's common for the photo to be there even if it doesn't show up in the cloud's trash.
What if the photo isn't in either of those?
Three reasons explain the absence: more than 60 days have passed, the image was never synchronized because backup was turned off, or someone emptied the recycle bin manually. In these cases, the file may still be stored in memory, and the applications below help to find it and prevent it from happening again.
1. Google Photos
In addition to maintaining a 60-day recycle bin, it automatically backs up each new photo as soon as the phone connects to Wi-Fi. Once activated, an image accidentally deleted on the device remains available in the cloud.
It's worth checking if backup is actually enabled: many people install it but never activate it. The option is located in the account menu, under Backup, and shows the date of the last synchronization.
2. Gallery
It organizes albums by date, location, and file type, and allows you to password-protect folders. The more organized your gallery, the less likely you are to select the wrong photo when cleaning up space.
It also separates screenshots, message images, and camera photos into different folders, which helps when deleting in batches without losing what matters.
3. Dumpster
Creates a permanent trash can on Android, similar to the one on a computer. After installation, everything that is deleted goes through it before disappearing, and restoring it takes just one tap.
Remember that it only protects what is deleted after installation. Therefore, it's worth installing now, even if you've already recovered the photo this time.
