Dumpster: How to create an extra trash can for your photos
With an extra trash can enabled, the next photo accidentally deleted can be restored with a single tap.
How does the Dumpster protect?
Dumpster runs in the background and saves a copy of each file you delete. Instead of disappearing, the photo goes to the app's trash bin, right on your phone.
Nothing is sent to servers. Copies remain on the device, and restoration works even without internet access.
The protection only applies after installation. Photos deleted before that date will not appear in the app's trash.
Step-by-step setup
The first time, the setup takes about a minute.
Find the app in the store and tap Install. You don't need to create an account.
Tap Allow when the app asks. Without this permission, it won't be able to detect deletions.
Tag photos, videos, and other file types if you want. Memory card protection may depend on the paid version.
With limited time available, 7 days is enough. With more leeway, 30 days provides ample opportunity to identify the mistake.
In your phone's battery settings, allow Dumpster to run in the background. This way, the system won't close it automatically.
Delete an unimportant photo and open Dumpster. If it appears in the list, the protection is working.
How to restore afterwards
Open Dumpster, go to the images category, and tap on the photo you want back. Then, select Restore.
The photo is returned to the folder from which it came, without creating duplicate copies in the gallery.
Combine the extra trash can with the backup
Dumpster fixes the faulty ringtone, but the copies remain on the phone itself. If the phone breaks, is stolen, or lost, the copies go with it.
Therefore, also leave Google Photos' automatic backup turned on. One layer covers everyday mistakes, the other covers the loss of the device.
