Recuva is a file recovery utility developed for Windows. It reads the contents of hard drives, USB drives, memory cards, and other devices connected to the computer and locates data left over from deletions, quick formats, or even simple corruption.
The advantage is its simplicity. The program offers an initial wizard that guides you through each step, which helps those unfamiliar with disk sectors or file systems. Instead of using complex commands, you select the file type, point to its location, and Recuva performs the scan.
When a photo is deleted, the file doesn't immediately disappear from the storage device. The system marks that space as free, but the data remains stored. Recuva acts precisely in this area: it searches for remnants of the photos and attempts to reconstruct the original file.
This explains why time is a critical factor. The more new recordings are made to the same card or disk, the greater the chances of photos being overwritten. Therefore, the first thing to do is stop using the device.
Risks of keeping media in use after deletion
After you realize you've accidentally deleted photos, your instinct might be to search the media in the hope of finding them. This behavior often hinders recovery. Each new photo, each app opened, and even saving a small file can occupy the space that previously belonged to the lost image.
For SD cards used in cameras, the ideal solution is to turn off the equipment and remove the card immediately. For cell phones, the recommendation is to remove the card from the device, if possible. For flash drives and external hard drives, disconnect the device from the computer and wait until you have a recovery tool installed.

Install Recuva safely

If the media you want to recover is the system disk itself, install Recuva on a USB drive or a different partition. This prevents the installer from writing data to the exact location where the deleted photos are.
Specify the media type and file type
When you open Recuva for the first time, the wizard asks what you are trying to recover. Choose the option related to images or photos. This limits the search to the desired format and makes the process faster.
In the next step, indicate where the photos were located. The program displays connected drives, such as the SD card, USB drive, or external hard drive. If the device does not appear in the list, check if it is mounted correctly in Windows and use the option to select the drive manually.

Run a scan on the card or disk
After setting up the wizard, click start scan. For recent deletions, the standard scan usually locates photos easily. It examines areas of the device that still point to recently deleted files.
If the images do not appear, select the deep scan option, also known as advanced recovery mode. This option reads every available sector of the media and searches for image file identifiers, even in areas that the system considers empty.
Deep scanning takes longer, but is necessary when the card has been formatted or when the flash drive has been written to many times. On a 64 GB card, for example, the process can take a considerable amount of time. Be patient and do not disconnect the device during the scan.
Select and save the recovered photos
At the end of the scan, Recuva presents a list of found files. You can preview the images to confirm which ones are actually intact. The program shows the size and a preview in many cases, making identification easier.
Select the photos you want to recover and click the recover option. The program will ask where to save the files. Use a folder on your computer's internal drive or on a different media than the one being recovered.
Never save recovered photos to the same card or disk from which they were read. Saving them may overwrite other files that have not yet been recovered and worsen the situation.
SD card recovery in cameras and cell phones
Many users lose entire trip photos after accidentally formatting the camera. In this scenario, the SD card should be removed from the camera as soon as possible. Then, place it in a card reader and connect it to the computer.
Recuva treats the memory card as a regular storage unit. The structure created by the camera is usually recognized normally, and the scan finds the files in their original folders. Even if the folder appears empty in Windows, the data remains on the card until another file occupies the space.
On Android phones, the same applies to memory cards that remain in the device. If the system allows mounting the card as external storage on the computer, the procedure is identical. When removing the card is not possible, try connecting the phone in file transfer mode and check if Windows recognizes the device.
In the case of modern mobile phones with internal storage, data access is more complex due to system permissions. In these cases, Recuva on Windows is not always the best option, unless the device is recognized as a mass storage drive.
Data recovery from USB drives and external hard drives
Anyone who works with photos on USB drives has probably emptied the trash and then noticed the absence of an important folder. USB drives are simple devices and are usually compatible with Recuva. The process is basically the same: connect the device, select the drive, and run the scan.
External hard drives also work well, especially when the deletion was accidental within Windows itself. Since they are large-capacity drives, a full scan may take longer than with a regular memory card. It's worth using advanced mode to search for photos in unformatted sectors.
Avoid using USB hubs that could interrupt the connection mid-process. A power outage or disconnection during scanning can force a new scan to begin and may even generate errors on the device.
How Recuva works on internal drives and SSDs
Recuva can also be used to recover deleted photos from your computer's internal hard drive. If you removed the photos from the Pictures folder and emptied the Recycle Bin, there is still a chance of recovery, provided the drive has not been used intensively.
